Penance
The forgiveness of sins committed after Baptism is conferred by a particular sacrament called the sacrament of conversion, confession, penance, or reconciliation. (CCC 1486)
Contrition and conversion lead us to seek a forgiveness for our sins so as to repair damaged relationships with God, self, and others. We believe that only ordained priests have the faculty of absolving sins from the authority of the Church in the name of Jesus Christ (CCC 1495).
Penance consists of a thorough examination of conscience, a contrite heart that is truly sorry for the sins committed, confession to the priest, receiving & accepting forgiveness, carrying out acts of penance to repair the damage, and a determination not to commit the sin again.
Penance has the effects of reconciliation with God and others, obtaining God's forgiveness, obtaining grace from God to help you stay on track, and returning to a state of grace with God.
